In an untamed zone in the north of Iran, exists a very beautiful and secretive Lake, in which you might find its name ridiculous in the first visit, it is no other place than the ghost lake in Noshahr in Mazandaran province.

In the most reticent and ingenious place in Noshahr, in Mazandaran province, among the intricate trees of Wide Leaves Jungle, is located the most incredible and all the while very beautiful Lake of Iran. This lake is also called Mamraz or Mola Kola, it’s called by this name because of being located in this place but it’s most famous name is the ghost Lake.

The length of the lake is 300 m (980 ft) and its width is 70 m (230 ft) and in total it covers an area of 40 hectares (99 acres) with the surface and its surroundings covered with alder and hornbeam trees. The hornbeam is a native species of plants and trees with the height of 15 to 25 m (49 to 82 ft), with a truncated trunk and smooth, gray-green skin that have been rooted in the lake for many years and are now decayed because of the constant proximity to water. The lake is listed as natural heritage site for its distinctive look and stunning beauty.

Its chilling, deadly silence will surely give you an adrenalin rush. The unblemished nature around the lake is foggy on most days and wild animals can be heard around it. Combined with the view of dried up trees in the middle of the lake, it has earned it the name of Ghost Lake.

This Mysterious Lake like its name has also a distinguished and uncanny shape. This is so different that this difference caused its name to be registered as one of Iran’s natural national heritages. The look of this Lake is as if you would think in the first place that the trees are growing backward and the roots are out.

The water is so clean and glossy that it increases its beauty as a result of the reflection of the trees in the water. What takes your breath away at first glance is the remains of trunks in the middle of the lake known as dead trees. You can also visit the forest that engulfs Mamraz Lake and enjoy its fresh air and natural views.

Have you ever thought about the fact that what vague and probably fascinating story might be behind the name of the lake in which the local people call it the ghost Lake? The ingenious and reticent atmosphere of this place is followed most of the days with the sound of wild animals and other insects and it is foggy most of the days. These two factors along with its strange shape of the lake make a delusional picture. The local people have rightly selected this name for this lake and many of them still know this place as where the ghosts are located.

There are two ways you can visit Mamraz: First, you can go to Noshahr or one of the other towns near the area and stay in one of the local bed and breakfasts, hotels, or motels. Otherwise, you can go camping onsite and experience a different kind of holiday.

The best time to visit Mamraz Lake is in the spring and summer. Please remember that only four-wheel drive cars can travel the road to the lake and make the necessary plans. There are no amenities around the lake and you must do your shopping in the city before you set off.
