The twin lake of Siah Gav is located in Abdanan town to the south of Ilam province and it is known as one of the rarest natural phenomena of the country. Having various natural and beautiful relics and considering the climate type, Elam is one of the tourism attractions of the country in different seasons. And this is the land of Alameto, where it is beautiful all over and man can observe the beauties created by the creator on earth.

Abdanan is 876 kilometers from Tehran enjoying a mild mountainous climate. This area has abundant mines including oil, sulfur and alum. Due to plenty of water resources, there are rich forests, pastures and fertile lands. The vestiges of an ancient civilization are scattered all around the region including the ruins of historical cities like Goorgabran and Krodit. This township holds many promenades worth seeing.

As we mentioned, Siah Gav is one of the amazing places in this area. There are plains and high mountains around the Siah Gav Lake. The lake has become an attractive tourist attraction with having the bird music and the symphony of the wind breeze. As it can be found out from its name, the lake consists of two parts. The water of the first lake flows into the other as a result of the difference between their levels. The water of the second lake then exits it and flows as a river and feeds the agricultural fields of Abdanan.

Two natural lakes have been linked through a canal. The canal is eight meters wide and four meters deep that has been naturally formed with a length of seventy meters. The water of this lake is so clear that one can easily see the fish swimming around in it. The water of the Siah Gav Lake is the vital source of many villages, and life in the countryside depends on the existence of the water in this river.

It should not be left out that Siah Gav Twin Lake traces back to thousand years ago. It is considered as one of the paleontological phenomena of Ilam Province. The process of erosion and changes in layers of the earth has led to the formation of such a lake. Some natives of this region claim that hippos used to live in this lake in ancient times and as these animals were black and unknown to people, the lakes got famous as Siah Gav. However, language experts like Mr. Mir Jalaleddin Kazzazi believe that the original name of these lake was “Siag Ow” (brownish blue water in local dialect) and eventually changed incorrectly to the current name.

One of the most important characteristics of the lake is the chemical components of the water. The water is rich of minerals such as sulfur. This, in turn, has resulted in a sweet and drinkable, rich of minerals. It also has provided a suitable environment for the growth of plants such as Milkvetch, Raspberry, Common fig and Willow. Fishing is another activity that has been possible as another outcome of the existence of a lake in this area.
The spring season is the best time to travel to this lake because nature reaches its efflorescence peak in the spring and creates a unique landscape around the lake. Of course, it should be noted that all the seasons of the year are pretty in Siah Gav Lake and you can travel there. To reach Siah Gav Twin Lake, you should travel eight kilometers of a path from Abdanan. After passing a bridge, you will reach the lake after a short walk. The lake is about three hours distant from city of Ilam and half an hour from Abdanan.
